The left hand jug seems to be the earlier and has a number of sprigs that do support this theory (click image to view). However this is the sole example seen and the handle terminal of the right image has been found on a considerable number of specimens varying in size from half to eight pints. The sprigging of these jugs varies considerably but they do form a homogeneous group. Click on the right image to see a number of different jugs displaying a variety of sprigs, some of which have also been seen of jugs as widely attributed as Lambeth (Thomas Smith), Mortlake (Kishere), and Bristol. The colour favours the former but I await more evidence. If however both left and right images on this page are from the same pottery it seems unlikely that it was in Denby or Chesterfield. |
